”En kväll mellan raderna” [An evening between the lines] was created as part of a course at Beckmans College of Design. The brief was to explore visual communication as a means of influencing opinions. We had three weeks to finish our projects.
While working on this, a long-running debate about the new gender identity law was ongoing in the media. Many of the articles painted pictures that I didn’t recognize myself in. As a trans person, I was portrayed as both perpetrator and victim; a dangerous individual and irreversibly harmed by healthcare.
My goal with this project was to use colors and everyday scenes to visualize the contrast I feel between my daily life and these articles. The work was created using ToonBoom Harmony and After Effects.
I sometimes wonder if my video was too passive in addressing the issue. If I should have animated someone who more loudly stands up for themselves instead. For me, it feels important that there are people who loudly stand up for themselves. I’m trying to get better at doing that too. But I also believe that no matter how much you stand up for yourself, there are days when you need to create a safe space for yourself to breathe for a moment. That’s when you need to create your own evening, between the lines.
